Real Nice Thing in Life #6

I have promised myself not to buy any clothing item for three months. I'm very proud of my organizational skills, but my closet is rapidly reaching its full capacity. I'm blessed enough to belong to the spoil girl's club where owning fifteen pair of shoes seem normal. From a practical point of view one should only need one pair. The other fourteen pairs are the result of years of being spoiled by a lovable father, mother, boyfriends, husband, etc. I'm en route of becoming a clothing addict. Which doesn't sound that bad when you think about it. Clothes have never seriously hurt anyone, and the side effects of shopping therapy are known to be quite positive involving feelings of pure ecstasy and immense happiness. The problem starts when you can't fit your clothes anywhere. I have to say however that I've always had the "one and one" rule. One new item comes in, one old item goes out. That way I've kept my closet in balance and my friends happy -purging closet day is quite popular among my closest pals-.

Before committing to three months of clothing abstinence, I made myself a little ritual. Like a smoker having his last cigarette, I treated myself to one last shopping spree. I promised myself that this spree could only consist of one item, one last special item that would seduce me and keep me entertained for the hard months to come. And without much effort this pretty little skirt found me. It was love at first sight. It made me look -and feel-  like a pumpkin. But not any type of pumpkin, but a pumpkin having a blast in the Carnavales de Rio. It was fluffy, heavy, and shapeless. In other words: PERFECT!

It's been two weeks since I started my non-buying-any-clothing-for-three-months-promise and I've done a great job. The only thing I gotten myself has been a package of bobby pins, which I chose to categorize as necessities and not clothing items/ accessories.

I think I will be able to control myself. With the money I'll be saving these three months I'm planning to buy a killer pair of shoes ;) Just kidding!

Real Nice Thing in Life #6: Clothes! and the joy of sharing what you have with the people you love.

Monday's deep thoughts....

I've been on the lookout for a cool pair of "real life" shoes (i.e. shoes that I can wear without blistering my feet to the point of bleeding) for the past couple of weeks. I love high heels, but those are unrealistic, impractical shoes, at least for those of us with wide feet and without a chauffeur to drive us everywhere instead of having to move at a regular and fairly slow pace by lifting and setting down each foot in turn, never having both feet off the ground at once, also known as walking.

So in my quest for the perfect pair of shoes I came along these Marie Antoinette inspired Miu Miu shoes. I like these for three main reasons:

1. They remind me of Courtney Love. Allow me to explain; I was walking by the Miu Miu SoHo store during a lunch break, and since I get attracted to shiny objects just  like a seagull, I decided to take a look inside to see all the different items I can't afford (with the exception of certain on sale shoes that nobody but dorks like me like). All of a sudden the store manager closes the store (with me inside) and I find myself shopping next to Nirvana's first lady Courtney Love. Her bag was laying open next to mine. I thought about slipping one of my blog's card into her purse (shame), but I didn't have the balls (more shame).

2. They are shiny. Read reason #1.
3. They are wide. As much as I like fashion and clothing, I'm a very basic human being. Along with loving skinny-dipping, honest smiles and laugh-until-your-belly-hurts moments, there's nothing I love more than being barefoot. This has caused my feet to widen up to the point where they look more like a square rather than a rectangle. So finding shoes that don't bother my always-growing bunion is always a challenge.

I took my soon-to-be everyday shoes out for a test drive. No blisters or purple toe nails for five blocks of non-stop walking! Life is beautiful.

Miracle on 34th Street

Somehow I was able to score this skirt from the Marni for H&M madness. I lost all hope when I walked by the store at 7:45 am the day of the opening and there was a line that went all the way from 34th to 33rd street. I stopped by the store during my lunch hour just to sob over empty Marni aisles; and then like a miracle (I know, I know it's just clothes but who doesn't like a dose of drama on a Sunday afternoon?) I found this skirt waiting for me at the entrance of the dressing room. We looked at each other and we knew from the very first second we were meant for each other.

hip hip hurraaayyy!

Bonus Picture: Here's me going at 120 mph. Isn't Alcibiades a great photographer?
It almost looks as if I am not moving!
